What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to become damaged. This can happen due to a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Symptoms vary but may include sudden weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, vision problems, or loss of coordination. Immediate medical attention is crucial to reduce brain damage and improve recovery chances.

Stroke recovery

Following a stroke, you could be affected in many different ways. For some, it takes only a few days or weeks to recover, for others, it can mean lifelong changes. However, there is help out there to help you recover.

Things to help recovery could be an adjustment or a period away from work. Adaptations around your home to aid mobility and independence. Physical or psychological support or help. You may also be given a rehabilitation plan to support you with your progress. This may be difficult but the challenges are set to help you recover and get onto the road of recovery.

The plan may involve your friends and family, and/or health care professionals such as home care teams or respite in a residential setting. If you have spent time in the hospital, the plan will be part of your discharge.

Your plan could include:

  • Exercises and physiotherapy: help with your mobility through exercises tailored to your range of movements

  • Mental health support: such as talking therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy to help with any associated depression or anxiety

  • Bladder and bowel support: exercises and medicines to help with any bladder or bowel issues

  • Cognitive support: activities and exercises to help with cognition, memory and thinking

After approximately 6 months you should receive a review of your plan to see if it still fits your needs. Depending on your progress with your rehabilitation plan, changes may be required to help you continue making positive progress following your stroke.
